A Century of Resilience: Council Member Sandra Ung Honors Holocaust Survivor on 100th Birthday

In a heartwarming tribute to a life defined by resilience, Council Member Sandra Ung presented a New York City Council Proclamation to longtime Flushing resident Hanna Slome on Sunday in celebration of her 100th birthday.

Born in Czechoslovakia, Hanna Slome survived one of history’s darkest chapters by escaping the Holocaust as a young girl. She emigrated to the United States at the age of 19, eventually making Flushing her home in 1958. For decades, Hanna has been a pillar of the community, carrying with her the strength and memories of a life that spans a century.

“Hanna is a living link to history, and her experiences remind us of the resilience of the human spirit,” said Council Member Ung during the celebration at Hanna’s home on Parsons Boulevard. Joined by Hanna’s family and loved ones, Ung honored the centenarian’s extraordinary journey and contributions to the Flushing community.

The celebration not only marked a personal milestone for Hanna but also served as a poignant reminder of the enduring human capacity to overcome adversity and build a life of purpose and legacy.
