Jelly donuts, tradition, community spirit take Center stage as Brooklyn lights up Hanukkah

Brooklyn Jewish community celebrated Hanukkah in a sweet and culturally rich way, as Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso partnered with community members for a special day filled with tradition, sufganiyot (jelly donuts), and togetherness.

The event featured a festive tour of some of Brooklyn’s most beloved Jewish bakeries, where participants enjoyed the holiday staple and even learned the art of making these delightful treats. The joy and unity of the occasion stood out as a testament to the borough’s rich cultural tapestry.

“We teamed up with Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso to explore the borough’s iconic Jewish bakeries and savor sufganiyot (jelly donuts),” the New York Jewish community shared with enthusiasm. “We even got to learn how to make them!”

The community expressed gratitude to Strauss Bakery, Taam Eden Bakery, and Sesame Bakery for opening their doors and offering a behind-the-scenes look at how these traditional Hanukkah donuts are made. The sweet treats symbolized not just a delicious tradition, but also the enduring strength and joy of Brooklyn’s Jewish culture.

“It was a sweet day of community and tradition, with so much joy to share,” the organizers added.

Key figures, including NYPD Deputy Chief Richie Taylor and CSI Brooklyn Regional Director Adam Berish, joined the celebration, showing broad support for the event. The presence of these officials underscored the spirit of unity
