New York City Mayor Eric Adams, alongside Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Matthew Fraser, has announced a major partnership with T-Mobile, naming the company as the city’s primary wireless carrier.

This five-year agreement is expected to save taxpayers millions while ensuring city employees, particularly first responders, have access to the latest 5G technology and reliable mobile service.

Mayor Adams emphasized that the initiative aligns with his administration’s goals of modernizing city infrastructure while cutting costs for working-class families.

“To keep New Yorkers safe, our city government needs to lead from the front, embracing innovative, forward-looking technology. But we need to also ensure we are protecting taxpayer dollars, while simultaneously finding ways to make our city more affordable for our dedicated municipal workforce,” he said.

“T-Mobile has a proven track record of delivering the highest level of service and security needed for a city like New York City. Together, we will save millions in taxpayer dollars, put millions of dollars in savings back into the pockets of our workforce’s pockets, continue to utilize cutting-edge technology, and, most importantly, ensure that our brave first responders have the tools they need to better protect our city.”

The agreement also includes financial benefits for city employees. Those who are already T-Mobile customers will receive discounts on their personal wireless plans, while new subscribers will be eligible for reduced rates as well. These savings, Adams noted, align with his administration’s broader efforts to ease financial burdens on working-class New Yorkers.

CTO Fraser underscored the significance of the partnership for public safety.

“Our mission is to use cutting-edge technology to make New York City safer and more affordable for all, and this collaboration with T-Mobile is helping us do just that. By leveraging T-Mobile’s innovative technology, we’re ensuring that New York City’s first responders have the tools they need to operate at the highest level — a critical component of our mission to enhance public safety.”

T-Mobile, the first provider in the world to roll out a 5G standalone network in 2020, will now offer its advanced 5G technology to New York City employees. First responders will benefit from “T-Priority,” a program designed to provide faster speeds and higher priority access across all 5G bands, ensuring smooth communication even during high-traffic periods.

Callie Field, president of T-Mobile Business Group, expressed excitement about the partnership, saying, “The opportunity to serve the first responders, employees, and residents of New York City is a tremendous honor for T-Mobile, and we’re already off to a great start. This announcement also highlights Mayor Adams’ broader commitment to affordability. Over the past three years, his administration has saved New Yorkers more than $30 billion through various initiatives, including free internet programs for public housing residents, childcare vouchers, property tax relief, and expanded financial empowerment services.

The partnership with T-Mobile is part of a larger effort to modernize the city’s digital infrastructure. Programs like “Big Apple Connect,” which provides free high-speed internet to public housing residents, and the city’s “Gigabit Centers,” which offer digital literacy training, have been key initiatives in Adams’ push to bridge the digital divide.

With this new deal, the Adams administration continues to integrate technology into public services, aiming for a more connected, efficient, and affordable New York City.
