Mayor Eric Adams Celebrates Greek Heritage at Gracie Mansion

Mayor Eric Adams hosted a special reception at Gracie Mansion to honor the Greek American community and its rich contributions to the city, reaffirming the strong cultural and historical ties between New York and Greece.

“It is amazing when we come here year after year and celebrate the real presence and vibrancy that the Greek community has brought to this great city,” Mayor Adams said, acknowledging the deep-rooted influence of Greek culture in New York.

As the city with the largest Greek population in the United States, Mayor Adams emphasized the vital role Greek Americans have played across various sectors—from architecture and literature to law enforcement and business. “Your presence and the Greek presence in this city is so significant across our whole city, from Bay Ridge to Brooklyn to Astoria and Manhattan,” he noted.

Reflecting on his longstanding relationship with the Greek community, the mayor recalled their support throughout his career, from his time as Brooklyn Borough President and State Senator to his current role as mayor.

Mayor Adams paid tribute to Greece’s historical contributions to democracy and freedom, praising the resilience of the Greek people, both in their fight for independence from the Ottoman Empire over two centuries ago and their enduring spirit today.

“You gave us democracy and freedom. You gave us the spirit and energies we’ve read from your scholars and we learn from your beats in medicine,” he said.

Highlighting the contributions of Greek American law enforcement officers, Adams commended their dedication to public safety and their role in shaping New York City’s security.

The celebration also set the stage for the upcoming Greek Independence Day Parade at the end of the month, where Mayor Adams pledged to march alongside the community in a vibrant display of Greek culture and pride.

“We will walk together down Fifth Avenue to celebrate Greek Independence Day,” he announced, underscoring the significance of the annual event.

In closing, Mayor Adams reiterated his administration’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and ensuring New York remains a city where all communities can thrive. “We are the greatest city on the globe because we have the greatest people on the globe,” he declared.

The event was attended by Greek dignitaries, community leaders, and honorees, who were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the city.
