NY trooper Thomas Mascia in good spirits after parkway shooting

In a harrowing incident on the Southern State Parkway, New York State trooper, Thomas Mascia, has found himself facing the unimaginable when a routine check turned into a dangerous encounter.

At approximately 11:30 p.m. last night, Mascia was shot in the leg by an unidentified gunman near Exit 17.

Despite the gravity of the situation, Mascia, 27, remained resilient and “in good spirits” following surgery at Nassau University Medical Center. The trooper’s ordeal began as he approached a suspicious black Dodge Charger parked on the median in West Hempstead, under the assumption that the driver might need assistance.

“Shots fired! Shots fired! I’m hit! I think my kneecap is broken,” Mascia’s voice crackled over the police radio, capturing the urgency of the moment. Demonstrating presence of mind even under fire, Mascia had noted the car’s license plate before exiting his cruiser.

As shots rang out, Mascia was struck in the leg and quickly sought cover behind his patrol car, while the shooter sped away westward. In a display of remarkable composure, he managed to retrieve his first aid bag and administer emergency treatment to his own injuries.

“He was able to retrieve his first aid bag and tend to his own wounds,” confirmed State Police Superintendent Steven James.

The swift response from another trooper ensured Mascia was transported to the hospital, where he underwent surgery. Remarkably, he did not return fire at the assailant, who authorities suspect fled into New York City. The suspect’s vehicle, described as a black sedan with distinctive custom matte gray dual exhaust tips and bearing the license plate “997636T,” remains at large.

With law enforcement agencies on high alert, the search for the gunman continues. Meanwhile, Trooper Mascia’s courage and quick thinking in the face of danger serve as a testament to the bravery and dedication of those who protect and serve.
