NYPD body cam footage released in case of detective’s fatal shooting as defense prepares for trial

In a significant development in the case of NYPD Det. Jonathan Diller’s tragic death, 25 police body camera videos from the day he was fatally shot earlier this year have been handed over to the defense attorneys representing Guy Rivera, the man accused of the crime.

This transfer of evidence was revealed during a brief hearing at Queens State Supreme Court, where prosecutors confirmed they also provided approximately 1,000 pages of documents to Rivera’s legal team.

The court is set to schedule pretrial hearings following the release of grand jury minutes to the defense in the coming weeks, with the next court appearance already on the calendar for December 3. During the hearing, Rivera was present in the courtroom alongside about 15 NYPD officers, underscoring the serious nature of the proceedings.

Rivera, a 34-year-old resident of Woodside, Queens, faces multiple charges, including intentional murder and first-degree murder of a police officer, arising from the shooting that occurred during a traffic stop in Far Rockaway on March 25.

According to police reports, a bullet fired by Rivera struck Diller beneath his protective vest, inflicting a fatal wound to his abdomen.

Diller, who had served on the force for three years, was mourned as the first NYPD officer killed in the line of duty since 2022, marking a somber moment for the department and the community.
