Bronx Deputy Borough President Janet Peguero Steps Down to Embrace Motherhood

In a heartfelt announcement that resonated across the borough, Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson confirmed the departure of Deputy Borough President Janet Peguero, who is stepping down from her position to focus on her new role as a mother.

“It is with an emotional heart that I share the news of Deputy Borough President Janet Peguero stepping down from her position in our administration to focus on her family as a new mom,” wrote Gibson in an official statement. “Although this transition may seem sudden, it has been influenced by her deep love and commitment to her daughter.”

Peguero, who served in the role for the past three years, leaves behind a remarkable legacy of advocacy, innovation, and impact. During her tenure, she redefined the position of Deputy Borough President, managing critical areas including Health and Human Services, Borough Operations, Policy, and Community Services. Her leadership was marked by a steadfast commitment to equity, particularly for immigrant communities, women, and small businesses.

“Janet has made an incredible impact on our office and the Bronx over the past three years,” Gibson emphasized. “She fostered vital partnerships, supported economic development, and advocated tirelessly for our immigrant communities, ensuring they were heard, represented, and supported.”

Among her many accomplishments, Peguero was instrumental in securing millions in federal funding for Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (M/WBEs) and empowerment zones. She also drove community input through civic engagement initiatives and advanced workforce development via the Hunts Point Forward Plan.

Her advocacy extended into public health, where she championed maternal healthcare improvements and played a lead role in implementing parental paid leave policies—efforts that underscore her enduring commitment to supporting Bronx families.

“As the first Dominican American woman to serve as Deputy Borough President, Janet’s leadership was grounded in equity and compassion for all who call the Bronx home,” Gibson noted, reflecting on Peguero’s trailblazing tenure.

“As Janet transitions into motherhood, we express our deep gratitude for her extraordinary contributions. Her legacy of dedication to equity, compassion, and excellence will continue to inspire our work in the Bronx,” Gibson added. “We wish her and her family all the best in this exciting new chapter, and I am forever grateful to call her my friend and my sister. Thank you, Madame Deputy, for your commitment and service to our team and to our Borough.”

Peguero’s departure marks not just the end of a chapter in Bronx leadership but also the beginning of a new journey defined by love, family, and continued inspiration.
