In a vibrant show of cultural unity and unwavering support, Mayor Eric Adams joined New York City’s Mexican community on Monday to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and honor their enduring contributions to the city.
“They call New York City ‘Puebla York’ for a reason!” Mayor Adams wrote in a statement. “The five boroughs are home to hundreds of thousands of Mexicans who have shared their work ethic, vibrant culture and values. On Monday, we proudly celebrated Cinco de Mayo alongside them!”
As part of the festivities, the Mexican flag was ceremoniously raised at Bowling Green in Lower Manhattan. Despite the weather, the moment was filled with pride and solidarity.
“We were also proud to raise the Mexican flag at Bowling Green alongside our Mexican brothers and sisters — because rain or shine, our support is unwavering for them and their families,” Adams added.
The term “Puebla York” affectionately reflects the deep roots of Mexican heritage, particularly from the state of Puebla, within the city.
Monday’s celebration was another testament to the strong bond between New York City and its vibrant Mexican population.
