“The Time to Act Is Now”: Bronx Leaders Unite in Urgent Call for Citywide Diabetes Prevention Program

Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson has called for a citywide diabetes prevention program following the Diabetes Action Summit held in collaboration with Health People, BronxCare Health System, and NYC DOHMH.

“Yesterday’s Diabetes Action Summit—hosted in partnership with Health People, BronxCare Health System, and NYC DOHMH—was more than a conversation; it was a united call to action,” Gibson stated.

The summit spotlighted alarming data: in some Bronx communities, diabetes affects 20–25% of residents, leading to severe complications like amputations and dialysis.

In response, Gibson and partners are advocating for a comprehensive training program to help residents lower blood sugar levels and stop the progression of the disease.

“We are calling for a citywide diabetes prevention program to train residents in lowering blood sugar levels and help prevent the alarming rise in lower limb amputations and dialysis,” she emphasized.

“Together, we are mobilizing community leaders, health professionals, and residents to confront this crisis with urgency, equity, and empowerment,” Gibson added, concluding with a powerful reminder: “The time to act is now.”
