“Bronx Mothers Cannot and Will Not Wait”—Why a Birthing Center is Long Overdue

Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson put it plainly: “Bronx Mothers Cannot and Will Not Wait.”

The maternal health crisis in the Bronx, which disproportionately affects Black and Latina women, demands immediate action.

With alarming maternal mortality rates, the lack of a dedicated birthing center in the borough is unacceptable.

The newly released Birthing Center Report lays out clear recommendations to expand care, and the most urgent one is clear—a Bronx-based birthing center.

As Gibson rightly stated, “It’s time we put the health and well-being of our mothers and families first and get this done.”

The question is, will city and state leaders finally listen? Bronx mothers deserve safe, high-quality maternity care. It’s time to act—no more delays, no more excuses.
