Council Member Sandra Ung Joins Effort to Combat Food Insecurity in District 20

In a heartwarming community effort, Council Member Sandra Ung joined Meals for Unity and the Chinese-American Planning Council at the Nan Shan Senior Center to distribute 250 meals to seniors as part of the “Spring Into Giving” initiative.

This program aims to support vulnerable members of the community, particularly older adults facing food insecurity.

“For those facing food insecurity, especially older adults in our community, every single meal counts!” said Ung. “I joined Meals for Unity and the Chinese-American Planning Council at the Nan Shan Senior Center to ‘Spring Into Giving’ by distributing 250 meals that will help feed our neighbors in District 20. Thank you to all of the volunteers for your hard work!”

The event underscores the growing issue of food insecurity in the United States.

According to Feeding America, more than 44 million Americans, including 9 million older adults, struggle with hunger. Rising costs of living, limited access to nutritious meals, and financial constraints have left many seniors in need of support.

Programs like Meals for Unity play a crucial role in bridging the gap by ensuring access to warm, healthy meals.

Volunteers worked alongside Council Member Ung, distributing meals and engaging with seniors at the Nan Shan Senior Center, a hub for older adults in Flushing, Queens.

The initiative highlights the importance of community-driven efforts in addressing food insecurity and ensuring that no one in District 20 goes hungry.

With events like “Spring Into Giving,” local leaders and nonprofit organizations continue to strengthen the safety net for vulnerable populations, reinforcing the message that food is a fundamental right, not a privilege.
