In a bold statement on September 25, 2024, Council Member Kristy Marmorato of the 13th District in the Bronx voiced her strong opposition to the Department of City Planning’s recent vote on the controversial “City of Yes” proposal.

Marmorato characterized the decision as “nothing short of irresponsible,” highlighting the serious concerns raised even by the city’s own commissioners regarding crucial elements of the plan, including accessory dwelling units (ADUs), parking mandates, and significant infrastructure deficiencies.

“This city cannot afford a half-baked approach when it comes to fundamental changes that affect our communities,” Marmorato asserted.

She emphasized the urgent need for solutions that are grounded in reality, particularly in addressing the existing infrastructure gaps that already strain neighborhoods.

“We need to ensure that our policies do not compound these issues with vague, ill-prepared strategies.”

The council member stressed that the challenges surrounding parking, essential services, and the potential for unchecked development require a far more thorough examination.

“Instead, today’s vote rushes through changes that put communities like ours at risk of becoming overwhelmed without the necessary supports in place,” she warned.

Marmorato made it clear that she would not remain passive while the administration pushes through plans that disregard the voices of New Yorkers and the realities on the ground. “Our residents deserve thoughtful, deliberate planning that prioritizes their needs,” she concluded, urging for a reevaluation of the proposal in its current form.
