SBA urges Americans to patronize Small Business Saturday

The US Small Business Administration (SBA) encourages Americans to support their communities by shopping local on Small Business Saturday, which falls on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

“Small businesses are more than pretty storefronts and services. They’re vibrant hubs where communities gather, dreams take flight, and local economies thrive,” emphasized Marlene Cintron, SBA’s Atlantic Regional Administrator. With small businesses employing over half the workforce and fueling local economies, they’re not just vital for economic growth but for preserving the unique character of neighborhoods.

Since its inception in 2010 by American Express, and subsequent co-sponsorship by the SBA in 2011, Small Business Saturday has grown into a beloved annual tradition, ranking as the second most popular shopping day of 2023, according to the National Retail Federation. This year, the SBA has introduced the “Season of Small Business” to extend this momentum, urging patrons to continue supporting local businesses throughout the festive season.

“By supporting small businesses, you are strengthening local economies, preserving community character, and fostering connections,” Cintron noted, highlighting the importance of local spending.

She encourages everyone to plan a day out with stops at local cafes and eateries, attend community events, and share their experiences on social media using hashtags like #ShopSmall and #SeasonofSmallBiz.

Cintron also urges small business owners to capitalize on the season, with the SBA offering resources and materials to help them boost visibility. “When you support small businesses, you’re not just shopping—you’re investing in your community, preserving its culture, and helping it thrive,” she added.
