Mayor Adams declares NYC ‘safest big city in America’

Mayor Eric Adams has proudly announced New York City as the “safest big city in America,” citing a nine-month streak of crime reduction.

He emphasized the city’s proactive approach to public safety, stating, “The prerequisite to prosperity is public safety, and that is what we are going to be judged by.”

Mayor Adams highlighted significant achievements, including the removal of over 18,500 guns from the streets and the closure of more than 1,100 illegal smoke shops. “We’re breaking the cycle of crime in our city and making our city and communities safe,” he proclaimed.

Interim Police Commissioner Thomas Donlon lauded the NYPD’s efforts, noting, “There should be no doubt that in anyone’s mind that the men and women of the NYPD are the reason why New York is the safest large city in the world.”

Chief Michael LiPetri added insights into the strategy, revealing, “The NYPD is precision-based on an in-depth data analysis of what’s going on in the city.”

Despite the progress, challenges such as felony assaults and shoplifting persist. Chief LiPetri acknowledged the issue, saying, “We do see a correlation between mental illness and stranger assaults.”

The city remains committed to further reducing crime through strategic initiatives and community collaboration.
