NYC council member Pierina Sanchez advocates for fair system to protect vulnerable communities

In a passionate statement shared on her X account, New York City Council Member Pierina Sanchez addressed the pressing challenges faced by street vendors in the city, highlighting the urgent need for reform to support these vital members of the community.

Sanchez emphasized that with immigrant communities facing threats across the nation, New York City must take proactive measures to protect its street vendors, who are predominantly immigrants.

“With immigrant communities under threat nationwide, we must do better for NYC street vendors — 95% of whom are immigrants,” Sanchez wrote. “Instead of enforcement alone, let’s create a fair, rules-based system that expands access to opportunity. Street Vendor Reform is needed now more than ever.”

Sanchez’s remarks come at a time when street vendors—often seen as an integral part of the city’s cultural fabric—are facing increased scrutiny and enforcement actions. The council member’s call for a comprehensive reform package aims to establish a more equitable framework that not only protects vendors but also fosters their ability to thrive in New York City’s dynamic economy.

Her advocacy reflects a growing recognition of the contributions that street vendors make to the city, as well as the need for policies that address their unique challenges.

By promoting a rules-based system, Sanchez envisions a future where street vendors can operate with greater security and support, ultimately benefiting both the vendors and the communities they serve.
