JCRC-NY Honors Hakeem Jeffries with inaugural Shamash Award for unwavering leadership

The Jewish Community Relations Council of New York (JCRC-NY) has presented its inaugural Shamash Award to Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

The award aimed to recognize his commitment to the Jewish community and all New Yorkers.

The ceremony took place during the celebration of Hanukkah, a fitting occasion to honor Jeffries for embodying the spirit of the shamash—the candle on the menorah that illuminates and spreads warmth to others.

“Today, we had the honor of recognizing Leader Hakeem Jeffries with JCRC-NY’s inaugural Shamash Award—a meaningful tribute to his unwavering leadership and dedication to the Jewish community and all New Yorkers,” JCRC-NY wrote in a statement.

The shamash candle role, lighting all others on the menorah, was seen as symbolic of Jeffries’ leadership, which has been a source of strength, guidance, and light for the people he serves.

Leader Jeffries has become a beacon of hope, demonstrating his commitment to positive change in both the Jewish community and the broader public.

In response to rising antisemitism, he helped launch the Breaking Bread, Building Bonds initiative, an effort to educate children of all backgrounds about Jewish identity and history—one of JCRC-NY’s core goals.

“Leader Jeffries embodies the spirit of the shamash, consistently standing as a source of strength, guidance, and light for those he serves,” the statement continued.

Jeffries’ solidarity with Israel has also been evident in his actions, particularly following the tragic October 7 attacks. His efforts led to the securing of over $14 billion in conditional aid to Israel, supporting the safe return of hostages and reinforcing his commitment to international peace and justice.

The JCRC-NY expressed deep gratitude for Jeffries’ leadership, adding: “We are deeply grateful to Leader Jeffries for sharing his inspiring words, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to the Sephardic Jewish Community Center for graciously hosting this special event.”

The event, which brought together community partners and supporters, marked a significant moment in the ongoing effort to honor those who dedicate their lives to making the world a better place.
