A fierce spring snowstorm unleashed chaos across Minnesota and western Wisconsin, forcing hundreds of schools to close or delay classes between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

What began as rain quickly turned into heavy snowfall as temperatures plummeted, blanketing the region. By 6 a.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service recorded 7.4 inches of snow at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, with a winter storm warning gripping the Twin Cities and a blizzard warning in effect farther south.

With travel conditions deteriorating rapidly, school districts took no chances.

Schools such as Lake Benton, Lakeview Public Schools, and Minneota Public School shut down early on Tuesday, while major districts, including Anoka-Hennepin, Edina, and Hudson School District in Wisconsin, announced full closures on Wednesday. Minneapolis Public Schools opted for an e-learning day for older students, while younger students got the day off.

Many institutions, including St. Paul, Faribault, and Red Wing public schools, transitioned to virtual learning, with others, like Lakeville Public Schools and All Saints Catholic School, delaying their start by two hours.

With roads treacherous and visibility poor, school officials prioritized safety, highlighting the unpredictability of spring weather in the Midwest.
