Virgin Group founder Branson Celebrates 21 Years of Virgin Atlantic In-Flight Baby with Heartfelt Tribute

Business magnate and Virgin Group founder Richard Branson has marked a unique milestone in the history of his airline, Virgin Atlantic, by celebrating the 21st birthday of Virginia, the first baby born aboard one of its flights.

In a heartwarming social media post, Branson reminisced about the extraordinary circumstances surrounding Virginia’s birth, which took place 21 years ago mid-air over the Sahara Desert on a flight from Lagos to London.

“For the past 21 years, I’ve had a wonderful pen pal. On this day, 21 years ago, Virginia became the first person to be born on a Virgin Atlantic flight,” Branson shared.

He recounted how Virginia’s mother, who was traveling with her 19-month-old son, unexpectedly went into labor a month early. Thanks to the swift response of a nurse, a surgeon, and the airline’s crew, Virginia was safely delivered at 30,000 feet.

As a gesture of celebration, Virgin Atlantic gifted Virginia a free flight every year for 21 years, a tradition that has fostered a special bond between her and Branson.

“We touch base every year on her birthday. Sometimes we share song suggestions, and I love hearing all about her travels and life updates,” he added, describing Virginia as his “favorite pen pal to date.”

The touching tribute concluded with Branson sending his love to Virginia and her family, celebrating not just her milestone birthday but also their unique connection.

Virginia’s story remains a fascinating chapter in aviation history, highlighting a rare but memorable moment in the skies.
