Gov Hochul appoints Phillip Hom to New York State Supreme Court

Governor Kathy Hochul has announced the appointment of three distinguished individuals to the New York State Supreme Court, including the esteemed Phillip Hom ’86.

Justice Phillip Hom’s judicial journey began with his election to the Queens Civil Court in 2017, followed by his ascension to the New York State Supreme Court in 2019.

His career is a testament to his steadfast commitment to public service and legal excellence.

Reflecting on his extensive public service, Justice Hom’s career took a pivotal turn in 2002 when he became the Chief of Staff for the first Asian American elected to the New York City Council.

In this role, he managed the Council Member’s staff and oversaw the office budget, paving the way for increased representation and diversity within the council.

By 2010, Justice Hom’s leadership capabilities earned him a promotion to assistant director of the Council’s legislative unit, where he supervised staff preparing critical legislation. His influence extended beyond the City Council, as he later served as Deputy General Counsel in the New York City Comptroller’s office, further enhancing his legal acumen and leadership within New York’s governmental framework.

Governor Hochul’s appointment of Justice Hom not only highlights his illustrious career but also marks a significant milestone in his journey as a trailblazer for Asian Americans in the legal field.

His appointment is a proud moment for the New York judiciary, reflecting a commitment to diversity and excellence in public service.
