In an open letter addressed to U.S. Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis, community activist Ibrahim Kurtulus counters her recent remarks on Türkiye’s role in U.S. foreign policy, describing them as “significant inaccuracies” that could harm bilateral relations.
Kurtulus emphasizes Türkiye’s “enduring role as a stabilizing force” and calls for recognition of its contributions to diplomacy, counterterrorism, and regional stability.
Kurtulus highlights Türkiye’s official name as the “Republic of Türkiye,” urging respect for its sovereignty. He also points to Türkiye’s diplomatic achievements, including recent negotiations involving Israeli hostages, as well as its indispensable role in NATO. “Türkiye is absolutely essential to NATO’s southern flank,” Kurtulus notes, referencing former Ambassador James Jeffrey’s remarks.
He further warns that Malliotakis’ criticism aligns with “smear campaigns” that seek to undermine Türkiye’s legitimacy. He calls for a more “balanced perspective” in U.S.-Türkiye relations, stressing that “demonizing or mischaracterizing [Türkiye’s] actions serves neither U.S. interests nor global peace.”
