Fresh Meadows Honors Unsung Hero Haider with Street Co-Naming

The corner of 58th Avenue and 189th Street in Fresh Meadows has been co-named in honor of Christine Haider, a longtime civic activist and dedicated member of Community Board 11 (CB11).

The newly named street corner stands as a lasting testament to Haider’s enduring legacy of service, compassion, and unwavering commitment to her neighborhood.

Council Member Sandra Ung, who played a pivotal role in securing the co-naming, expressed deep admiration for Haider’s contributions, emphasizing the importance of grassroots community involvement.

“The people who make the biggest difference in our city are not always those with the most power or the biggest platforms,” Ung stated. “They are the neighbors who serve on their local community board, volunteer at civic meetings, and take the time to care. They are people like Christine Haider.”

Haider was widely known in the Fresh Meadows community for her tireless efforts in civic engagement and for being a dependable voice on CB11.

Her passion for her neighborhood left a strong impression on those who worked alongside her and benefited from her leadership.

“Now, the corner of 58th Avenue and 189th Street in Fresh Meadows will be a permanent reminder of her legacy—a legacy of service, dedication, and love for her community,” Ung added. “People like Christine are the unsung heroes of our city.”

Local residents and officials attended the street co-naming ceremony to honor Haider’s memory, sharing stories of her community work and the lasting impact she made in their lives.
