Mayor Adams breaks ground on $30 million Gotham Health Center to expand healthcare access in Far Rockaway

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced significant progress on the construction of a state-of-the-art Gotham Health community health center in Far Rockaway, Queens.

The $30 million project, funded by the city, aims to bridge healthcare gaps in the historically underserved community, providing essential medical services, including primary care, specialty treatments, and advanced diagnostic imaging.

Mayor Adams, alongside NYC Health + Hospitals President Dr. Mitchell Katz, NYCEDC President Andrew Kimball, and Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, emphasized the importance of equitable healthcare access. “Our goal is to make New York City the best place to raise a family, and that starts with ensuring every community has access to quality healthcare,” Adams stated.

Located at 1720 Village Lane, the 22,000-square-foot facility is set to open in 2027 and will offer a full range of services, including pediatric care, women’s health, mental health support, dental and vision care, chronic disease management, and radiology services like CT scans and 3D mammography.

Borough President Richards highlighted the health challenges Far Rockaway residents have faced due to limited healthcare facilities. “For far too long, families here have experienced higher rates of preventable diseases. This investment is a major step toward making our community healthier and stronger,” he said.

The health center aligns with Mayor Adams’ HealthyNYC initiative, which seeks to increase the city’s life expectancy to 83 years by 2030. The project also advances the Downtown Far Rockaway Roadmap for Action, a long-term plan to revitalize the neighborhood.

Elected officials, including U.S. Representative Gregory Meeks, State Senator James Sanders Jr., and City Council Majority Whip Selvena Brooks-Powers, praised the investment as a game-changer for local healthcare. However, Brooks-Powers underscored the continued need for a Level 1 or Level 2 trauma center on the peninsula.

With construction now underway, city leaders remain committed to ensuring that Far Rockaway residents receive comprehensive, high-quality healthcare close to home.
