NYC Council Unveils FY26 Budget Response, Rejects Cuts, Prioritizes Essential Services

The New York City Council has taken a firm stand against budget cuts, advocating instead for a “people-first” fiscal plan that prioritizes essential services, housing, education, and public safety.

Council Member Amanda Farías announced the development in a statement following the Council’s unveiling of its FY26 Preliminary Budget Response.

Speaking alongside Speaker Adrienne Adams and fellow Council members, Farías emphasized the need for a budget that supports New Yorkers amid economic uncertainty.

“Yesterday, I stood with Speaker Adams and my Council colleagues to unveil the Council’s FY26 Preliminary Budget Response. At a time of rising costs and growing uncertainty, we’re rejecting harmful cuts and advocating for a people-first budget—one that safeguards essential services and invests in housing, education, public safety, and working families.

“This is how we move forward together and build the stronger, more equitable city New Yorkers deserve,” she stated.

The budget response reflects growing concerns about the impact of potential service reductions on vulnerable communities. By pushing for increased investments in key sectors, the Council aims to ensure economic stability and equitable growth for all residents.

The proposal now sets the stage for further negotiations between the Council and the Mayor’s office, with lawmakers hoping to secure funding that aligns with their vision of a stronger, more resilient New York City.
