Student innovation at Bronx High School, Real-time transit board created to aid commutes

Visitors to the Bronx High School of Science are now greeted by a unique addition—a Transit Arrival Board near the main entrance that provides real-time updates on train arrivals at nearby stations.

This impressive tool, designed and coded by students Shadman Syed ’25 and David Wang ’24, aims to ease the commute for students and staff relying on public transit.

Syed shared the inspiration behind the project, noting the unpredictability of the city’s train schedules.

“Trains can be unreliable, and sometimes we end up waiting at a station for a long time or just miss a train. Having transit times and delays visible at a quick glance can help us manage our time better,” he explained.

Since its launch, the board has become an essential feature for both students and staff.

By publicly sharing their code, Syed and Wang hope to see similar systems implemented in other schools, providing even broader benefits for public transit users.
