Tensions Rise, Vladimir Putin issues nuclear warning amid Ukraine conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a grave warning to the United States and its allies, asserting that Moscow may resort to nuclear weapons if Ukraine is permitted to conduct long-range missile strikes deep into Russian territory.

This declaration has ignited fears of a potential escalation that could lead to World War Three, a concern acknowledged by both Moscow and Washington.

Putin’s warning encompasses scenarios involving significant cross-border conventional attacks utilizing aircraft, missiles, or drones. He emphasized that any nuclear power supporting such an attack would also be considered a participant in the conflict.

Specifically, he pointed to Western long-range missiles, including the US ATACMS and British Storm Shadows, which would necessitate Western satellite and targeting assistance.

Former Soviet and Russian diplomat Nikolai Sokov interpreted Putin’s message as “very clear: ‘Don’t make a mistake – all these kind of things may mean nuclear war.’”

This stark warning underscores the serious implications of escalating military support to Ukraine.

Adding to the tension, Bahram Ghiassee, a London-based nuclear analyst, connected Putin’s remarks to Ukraine’s ongoing advocacy for long-range missiles and President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s recent meeting with US President Joe Biden. The interplay of these diplomatic efforts has heightened the stakes in an already volatile situation.

The international community remains divided on the authenticity of Putin’s threat—whether it is a genuine warning or a strategic bluff. If it is indeed a bluff, there is a possibility that the West may intensify its military backing for Ukraine, dismissing Moscow’s ominous warnings. Conversely, if Putin is serious, the repercussions could be catastrophic.
