Zuckerberg unveils progress reports, future of AI, social media

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has set an ambitious tone for 2025, outlining the company’s progress and future trajectory in AI, smart glasses, and social media. In a statement following Meta’s latest quarterly earnings report, Zuckerberg expressed optimism about the company’s direction and the transformative technologies it is working on.

“We ended 2024 on a strong note with now more than 3.3 billion people using at least one of our apps each day. This is going to be a really big year,” he stated. Acknowledging the urgency of the moment, he added, “I keep telling our teams that this is going to be intense because we have about 48 weeks to get on the trajectory we want to be on.”

Zuckerberg emphasized the pivotal role of AI in Meta’s future, particularly the company’s vision for a highly intelligent, personalized AI assistant. “I expect this to be the year when a highly intelligent and personalized AI assistant reaches more than 1 billion people, and I expect Meta AI to be that leading AI assistant,” he said.

He highlighted that personalization will be key, as users will want AI that reflects their unique context, interests, and culture.

Meta’s open-source AI efforts are also gaining traction, with Zuckerberg predicting that “this very well could be the year when Llama and open-source become the most advanced and widely used AI models as well.” He confirmed that “Llama 4 is making great progress in training,” and described it as an “omni-model with agentic capabilities,” capable of unlocking new AI use cases.

Another milestone Meta is working toward is the development of AI capable of coding and problem-solving at the level of a mid-level engineer. Zuckerberg described this as “potentially one of the most important innovations in history,” emphasizing that the company that achieves this first will gain a major advantage in AI research.

Beyond AI, Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses have been a hit, and 2025 will determine their long-term viability as a mainstream product. “Many breakout products in the history of consumer electronics have sold 5-10 million units in their third generation. This will be a defining year that determines if we’re on a path towards many hundreds of millions and eventually billions of AI glasses,” he noted.

To fuel these innovations, Meta is making massive investments in AI infrastructure. “We expect to bring online almost 1GW of capacity this year, and we’re building a 2GW, and potentially bigger, AI data center that is so big it would cover a significant part of Manhattan if it were placed there,” Zuckerberg revealed. He assured investors that these costs will be balanced by initiatives leveraging AI to drive revenue growth.

In the social media landscape, Zuckerberg expressed confidence in Meta’s platforms. He expects Instagram and Facebook Reels to continue growing, while Threads is on track to become “the leading discussion platform and eventually reach 1 billion people over the next several years.” The app has already surpassed 320 million monthly active users. Meanwhile, WhatsApp is making strides in the U.S., reaching over 100 million monthly active users. Facebook remains a dominant force with “more than 3 billion monthly actives,” and Zuckerberg teased a return to “some OG Facebook.”

The metaverse also remains a priority, with 2025 expected to bring major advancements to Meta’s Quest and Horizon platforms. “This is the year when a number of long-term investments that we’ve been working on will make the metaverse more visually stunning and inspiring,” he said, suggesting that Horizon’s future will become clearer in the coming months.

On the regulatory front, Zuckerberg expressed optimism about Meta’s relationship with the U.S. government, stating, “We now have a U.S. administration that is proud of our leading company, prioritizes American technology winning, and that will defend our values and interests abroad.”

Summing up his vision for the year ahead, Zuckerberg declared, “Between AI, glasses, massive infrastructure projects, doing a bunch of work to try to accelerate our business, and building the future of social media – we have a lot to do. I think we’re going to build some awesome things that shape the future of human connection.”

With AI breakthroughs, expanding product lines, and a focus on social media dominance, Meta is poised for what could be a defining year in the tech industry.
