Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) has issued an executive order barring state employees from using AI models developed by the Chinese startup DeepSeek on government-issued devices and networks. The directive, announced Tuesday, prohibits the downloading or use of the app on state-owned or leased devices, as well as on government-operated wireless networks.

State employees who have already installed DeepSeek were instructed to remove the app by Wednesday.

Youngkin’s move aligns with similar actions taken by other state leaders over concerns about data security and foreign influence. Earlier this month, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) implemented a similar ban on Chinese-owned AI and social media applications, including DeepSeek and the TikTok alternative RedNote. Additionally, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) announced Monday that New York state employees would also be prohibited from downloading DeepSeek on government-managed devices and networks.

The bans reflect growing bipartisan concerns over the potential security risks posed by foreign-developed AI tools, particularly those linked to China. Critics argue that such applications could expose sensitive data or be used for surveillance purposes.
