NYPD celebrates World Hijab Day, honors Muslim women officers

The New York Police Department (NYPD) has highlighted the significance of World Hijab Day, emphasizing the values of awareness, tolerance, and solidarity with the Muslim community.

In a statement, the department underscored the importance of the occasion in fostering inclusivity within one of the largest and most diverse police forces in the world.

“World Hijab Day serves as an occasion to foster awareness, encourage tolerance, and stand in solidarity with the Muslim community,” the NYPD wrote.

The department also acknowledged the dedication of its Muslim women officers, who seamlessly balance their roles as law enforcement professionals while upholding their religious beliefs.

“In one of the largest and most diverse police departments, Muslim women officers proudly wear both their blue uniforms and their hijabs, symbolizing their commitment to both public safety and their religious identity,” the statement read.

World Hijab Day, observed annually on February 1, was established in 2013 to promote understanding and respect for Muslim women who choose to wear the hijab.

The NYPD’s recognition of the day reflects its broader commitment to diversity, inclusion, and religious freedom within the force and the communities it serves.
