As temperatures begin to soar with the onset of summer, Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson has issued a citywide heat advisory, calling on residents to take precautions and stay safe during periods of extreme heat.
In a public statement, she emphasized the importance of hydration, access to cooling centers, and awareness of resources available during heatwaves.
“As summer approaches and temperatures rise, it’s important to stay safe during extreme heat,” Gibson stated. She urged Bronx residents to “drink plenty of water to stay refreshed and avoid heat-related illnesses,” while also highlighting the availability of air-conditioned cooling centers throughout the borough.
Residents are encouraged to seek relief at designated cooling centers, which are open to the public during official heat emergencies. “Escape the heat by visiting one of our designated cooling centers across the Bronx. Visit: finder.nyc.gov/coolingcenters to find your nearest cooling centers,” the advisory reads.
Additionally, Gibson advised residents to call 311 for real-time updates on heatwave conditions, cooling center locations, and other essential services.
The Department of Social Services (DSS) also activates a Code Red Alert during periods of extreme heat, ensuring that shelter is available to anyone experiencing homelessness. These shelters provide designated cooling areas where individuals can find relief from the heat.
Residents who are struggling to manage the costs of keeping cool at home are also encouraged to check their eligibility for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP). Information on how to apply can be found at: https://otda.ny.gov/programs/heap/contacts.
The borough president concluded with a message of community care: “Let’s look out for our neighbors—especially seniors, children, and those with medical conditions—during this time. Together, we can stay safe, cool, and healthy.”
