President Joe Biden underscored the importance of democratic principles and peaceful transitions of power during a meeting with Venezuela’s President-elect Edmundo González.
In a statement released on social media, Biden emphasized González’s inspirational leadership and the need to honor the will of the Venezuelan people.
“Today I hosted Venezuela’s President-elect Edmundo González, a man whose campaign inspired millions and one who should be taking the oath of office in four days,” Biden wrote.
The meeting highlighted the United States’ support for democracy in Venezuela amid concerns over the election results. President-elect González’s victory has been marred by allegations of electoral interference and reluctance from the incumbent government to facilitate a smooth transition.
“The people of Venezuela deserve a peaceful transfer of power to the true winner of their presidential election,” Biden stated, reiterating the need for respect for democratic processes.
The visit comes at a critical time for Venezuela as international scrutiny grows over its political crisis. The U.S. president’s remarks signal continued global pressure for transparency and adherence to electoral outcomes in the South American nation.
Observers view the meeting as a strong gesture of solidarity with the Venezuelan electorate, amplifying calls for a resolution that respects their choice.
