Bronx Borough President launches relief drive for Jamaica following Hurricane Melissa

Bronx, NY — Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson has announced a coordinated relief effort to support communities in Jamaica devastated by Hurricane Melissa, calling on Bronx residents to help families rebuild and recover after the destructive storm.

In partnership with government colleagues and the Consulate General of Jamaica in New York, the borough president’s office will begin collecting essential supplies immediately.

“We will be accepting donations for hygiene and health, shelter supplies, clean-up and recovery supplies, and clothing and bedding,” Gibson said in a public message urging residents to get involved.

She emphasized the importance of solidarity and compassion, noting that many Bronx families have deep ties to Jamaica.

“Please share this information with family, friends and anyone else who will be willing to support our neighbors in Jamaica rebuild and recover,” Gibson stated.

The relief drive comes as communities across Jamaica face widespread damage, displacement, and power outages caused by the hurricane. The Bronx — home to one of the largest Jamaican and Caribbean populations in the country — has historically mobilized quickly in the wake of natural disasters affecting the Caribbean region.

Collection information, drop-off sites, and volunteer details are expected to be released by the Borough President’s office in the coming days.

Residents wishing to participate can follow updates through the Borough President’s official channels.
