Flourishing in Community, a Fordham University initiative, announced the opening of applications for $40 million in environmental justice grants.
These grants, funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the Inflation Reduction Act, aim to support communities in New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and eight federally recognized Indian Nations.
“EPA’s Environmental Justice Thriving Communities Grantmaking program was developed in partnership with communities to increase access and capacity for smaller grassroots and environmental justice groups,” said Lisa F. Garcia, EPA Regional Administrator.
The initiative underscores Fordham’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges, with Dr. Julie L. Gafney noting, “Today marks a historic day for Fordham University and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 2. We are embarking on a journey to allocate $40 million in federal funds to the frontline communities that bear the brunt of the climate crisis.”
Senator Chuck Schumer expressed pride in the program, stating, “Flourishing in Community is a first-of-its-kind effort… overseen by Fordham University, it will directly invest in grassroots environmental justice groups.”
Community leaders echoed the importance of the program. Murad Awawdeh, President of the New York Immigration Coalition, highlighted its impact, “This support will ensure that our low-income neighbors and neighbors of color are equipped with the tools they need to fight back.”
Organizations in affected regions can apply to fund projects such as clean-ups, workforce development, and air quality improvements.
