Love and legalities: NYC power couple to wed amid federal probe

Two of New York City’s most influential figures are planning to tie the knot under a cloud of intrigue.

NYC Schools Chancellor David Banks and First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright are set to wed this weekend on the picturesque Martha’s Vineyard, sparking speculation about the timing of their union amidst a high-stakes federal corruption investigation involving the Adams administration.

This power couple, both prominent aides to Mayor Eric Adams, have kept their marriage plans under wraps, despite whispers of a summer 2023 wedding that never materialized. Now, as they prepare to exchange vows, the timing has raised eyebrows, with many pondering whether the nuptials are a strategic move to invoke spousal privilege in court.

Earlier this month, the investigation took a dramatic turn when Wright’s sophisticated Harlem residence on West 143rd Street was raided by federal agents. The search resulted in the seizure of her phone, marking a significant development in the ongoing probe.

Banks, who splits his time between Wright’s home and his own residence in Queens, also found himself at the center of the investigation when FBI agents raided his home and confiscated his phone.

The legal implications of their marriage are clear: in federal criminal cases, spouses are legally protected from being compelled to testify against one another.

This has led to widespread speculation that their wedding might serve as a legal shield amidst the swirling allegations.
