Mayor Adams champions future Ready NYC, expands paid internships, career pathways for students

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, alongside Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos, announced a major expansion of the Future Ready NYC initiative, a groundbreaking program designed to bridge education and employment for high school students.

The initiative will now encompass 135 schools across the city, introducing new pathways in HVAC and decarbonization, as well as human and social services.

Mayor Adams reflected on his own journey, sharing, “I was an auto mechanic, and the skills I learned allowed me to pay for college and stay afloat during tough times. That’s the opportunity we’re giving these young people—real skills that lead to real jobs.”

Chancellor Aviles-Ramos emphasized the program’s impact: “This past year, we invested over $8.2 million in paid internships and apprenticeships, putting resources directly into the hands of 10,000 students before they even graduated. This is about creating generational wealth and well-being.”

At Boys and Girls High School in Brooklyn, Principal Grecian Harrison highlighted the HVAC program’s role in preparing students for high-demand careers: “Our students are learning energy-efficient systems that open doors to lucrative careers while promoting sustainability.”

Sophomore Katheryn Chavelo Mosso, a participant, shared her enthusiasm: “Through hands-on projects, like building energy-efficient wall models, I’ve learned how architecture can contribute to climate action. This program inspires me to pursue a career in sustainable design.”

Council of School Supervisors President Henry Rubio lauded the initiative as “game-changing”, connecting classroom learning to tangible future opportunities. Mayor Adams reiterated the program’s focus, stating, “This isn’t just about jobs; it’s about creating pathways to the middle class and ensuring our young people thrive.”

With its expansion, Future Ready NYC is set to redefine career-connected learning, empowering New York City’s students with skills that pave the way for a brighter, more sustainable future.
