“After a suicide attempt at the age of 11 in Jamaica, Melissa Edwards moved to Florida and then New York, where she was treated by different psychiatrists and therapists. Finally, Edwards found the help she needed at our health system,” NYC Health + Hospitals stated in a statement on Facebook page.

Melissa’s experience underscores the importance of accessible mental health care and the critical role that supportive health systems play in the recovery of individuals facing similar challenges.

Her journey serves as an inspiring reminder that, despite the obstacles, it is possible to find hope and healing.

Understanding causes of Suicide

Suicide is a complex and multifaceted issue that affects individuals across various demographics.

The majority of individuals who attempt suicide suffer from mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. These disorders can lead to feelings of hopelessness and despair, making individuals more vulnerable to suicidal thoughts.
