Trump, Putin discuss Ukraine, Middle East, and AI in “highly productive” phone call, pledge to end war

United States President, Donald Trump, announced on social media that he recently held a “lengthy and highly productive” phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which the two leaders discussed a wide range of global issues, including the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, the Middle East, energy, artificial intelligence, and the strength of the U.S. dollar.

In a detailed post on his X platform, Trump revealed that the conversation also touched on the historical ties between the United States and Russia, particularly their alliance during World War II.

“We both reflected on the Great History of our Nations, and the fact that we fought so successfully together in World War II, remembering, that Russia lost tens of millions of people, and we, likewise, lost so many!” Trump wrote.

He emphasized the potential benefits of renewed cooperation between the two nations, stating, “We each talked about the strengths of our respective Nations, and the great benefit that we will someday have in working together.”

However, the primary focus of the call was on ending the devastating conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Trump revealed that both he and Putin agreed on the urgent need to stop the loss of life. “But first, as we both agreed, we want to stop the millions of deaths taking place in the War with Russia/Ukraine,” he said. Notably, Putin reportedly echoed Trump’s campaign slogan, “COMMON SENSE,” during their discussion.

Trump announced that the two leaders have agreed to initiate immediate negotiations to resolve the conflict. “We agreed to work together, very closely, including visiting each other’s Nations,” he stated. The president also revealed plans to inform Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about the conversation, adding, “I will be doing [this] right now.”

To lead the negotiations, Trump has appointed a high-profile team, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and Ambassador and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. “I feel strongly [the negotiations] will be successful,” Trump wrote.

Reflecting on the origins of the war, Trump reiterated his belief that the conflict could have been avoided. “Millions of people have died in a War that would not have happened if I were President, but it did happen, so it must end. No more lives should be lost!” he declared.

Trump also expressed gratitude to Putin for his cooperation, particularly regarding the recent release of Marc Fogel, an American citizen who had been detained in Russia. “I want to thank President Putin for his time and effort with respect to this call, and for the release, yesterday, of Marc Fogel, a wonderful man that I personally greeted last night at the White House,” he said.

Trump concluded his statement on an optimistic note, expressing hope for a swift resolution to the conflict. “I believe this effort will lead to a successful conclusion, hopefully soon!” he wrote.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions globally, with some praising the initiative as a potential breakthrough in ending the war, while others remain skeptical about the feasibility of such negotiations. As the world watches closely, the focus now shifts to the upcoming talks and their potential to bring peace to a region ravaged by conflict.
