United Gambian Association hosts farewell ceremony for outgoing President Cham, highlights remarkable achievements

The United Gambian Association (UGA), a nonprofit organization founded in 2011 by a group of concerned Gambians primarily based in New York City, has hosted a significant farewell ceremony for its outgoing President, Honorable Ebou Cham, while simultaneously celebrating the installation of the new President-Elect, Mr. PA Saine. Over the years, the UGA has expanded, embracing members from across the State of New York and its surrounding settlements.

The association was established with several key aims and objectives: to unify Gambians residing in the United States, provide much-needed immigration assistance to Gambian immigrants, help members integrate seamlessly into American society, and participate actively in voluntary services both in the Gambia and the U.S. These services address crucial areas such as HIV awareness programs, natural disaster relief, drug abuse prevention, teenage pregnancy, and combatting public health-related diseases like malaria. Additionally, the UGA is committed to providing free tutoring services to immigrant families from the Gambia, aiding them in their educational journey.

Since its inception over a decade ago, the UGA has been a beacon of support, creating awareness programs and offering training in critical skills such as CPR. They provide immigration services and emergency relief funds to members facing extreme challenges, underscoring their role as a safety net for the community. Education remains a cornerstone of their mission, with outreach programs designed to support children facing academic difficulties and initiatives such as back-to-school drives that bolster educational excellence within the community.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the UGA demonstrated exceptional leadership by providing aid to its members and promoting recognized prevention and practice methods to curtail the spread of the virus. They encouraged strict adherence to disease control guidelines and facilitated access to supplementary support from the State of New York, underscoring their commitment to community health and safety.

The association, as enshrined in its by-laws, is open to all Gambians living in the United States, with the primary objective of fostering a better community where everyone can contribute to sustainable growth.

This inclusive approach is celebrated as they bid farewell to their first president, Honorable Ebou Cham, whose tireless efforts and leadership have established the UGA as one of the most formidable organizations within the United States.

“It’s important to note that this association is open to all Gambians living in the United States, as enshrined in our by-laws with the primary objective of creating a better community where everyone can contribute immensely to the growth of our community for sustainability,” stated the Secretary-General of the United Gambian Association.

In the spirit of continuous growth and community service, the UGA invites members and friends to the grand ceremony for the installation of the new president, Mr. PA Saine.

Elected by the general membership in March 2024, Mr. Saine is set to lead the organization for a three-year term, with the possibility of serving two terms. The ceremony will take place on October 19, 2024, at 8:00 pm Eastern time, at Azal Hall, 1807 Hunt Avenue, Bronx, NY 10462.
