Woman charged with murder after fatal stabbing in Mott Haven

A 31-year-old woman has been arrested and charged with murder following the stabbing death of a man early Sunday morning.

Karlene Payne was taken into custody at 12:40 p.m. on Sunday and faces serious charges, including second-degree murder, two counts of manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon.

The incident unfolded in the Mott Haven neighborhood, where police were called to the vicinity of Lincoln Avenue and East 132nd Street at 4:14 a.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered 36-year-old Joshua Johnson suffering from a laceration to the leg.

Despite the efforts of emergency medical services, who transported him to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, Johnson tragically succumbed to his injuries.

A subsequent investigation led authorities to classify the incident as a homicide, with the initial laceration being identified as a stab wound.

Payne and Johnson were reported to have lived together at 5 Lincoln Ave., just blocks away from the scene of the crime. Police have described their relationship as “domestic in nature,” shedding light on the complexities surrounding this tragic event.
