Bronx BP Gibson Congratulates Samuels on Appointment as NYC Schools Chancellor

Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson has congratulated Kamar H. Samuels on his appointment as the new Chancellor of New York City Public Schools, describing the development as a positive step for public education in the city.

In a statement issued on behalf of the borough, Gibson praised Samuels’ decades of experience as a veteran educator, school leader and public school parent, noting that his background positions him well to lead the nation’s largest public school system.

“With decades of experience as a veteran educator, school leader, and public school parent, Chancellor Samuels brings a deep understanding of the public education system to this role,” Gibson said.

She highlighted Samuels’ commitment to academic excellence, culturally responsive learning and student achievement, stressing that his vision aligns with the borough’s belief in equitable access to quality education.

“His dedication to academic excellence, culturally responsive learning, and student achievement aligns with our fundamental belief that every child in New York City deserves access to a safe, inclusive, and high-quality education that provides pathways to good-paying jobs and future careers,” she stated.

The Bronx Borough President also underscored the importance of continued collaboration between her administration and the New York City Public Schools, especially as the borough commits significant resources to education infrastructure.
According to Gibson, her administration is investing over $85 million in capital funding for schools across the borough, making sustained partnership with the new Chancellor critical to student success.

“Continuing our collaboration with the New York City Public Schools Chancellor will be essential to ensure our scholars continue to have the resources and opportunities they need to excel academically,” she said.

Looking ahead, Gibson expressed optimism about working closely with Chancellor Samuels to address longstanding challenges in the education sector.

“I look forward to advancing this partnership with our new Chancellor to further invest in our schools, eliminate barriers to academic success and achievement, bridge the digital divide, and equip our youth with the resources they need for a successful future,” she added.

Kamar H. Samuels’ appointment has been widely welcomed by education stakeholders, with expectations that his leadership will strengthen equity, innovation and outcomes across New York City’s public schools.
