Bronx Democratic leaders gather to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at PS 121

By Robert Press

On Saturday, Bronx Democratic leaders gathered at PS 121 in the Allerton section to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month. The event, though sparsely attended due to the concurrent Bronx Puerto Rican Day Parade, brought together notable figures including State Senator Jamaal Bailey, Assemblyman John Zaccaro, Councilman Kevin Riley, and Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark.

Senator Bailey kicked off the celebration with a demonstration of his Spanish language skills, temporarily stalling as other officials arrived from the parade. Upon DA Clark’s arrival, Senator Bailey yielded the floor, allowing her to address the audience. Clark emphasized her unique position as the sole elected official representing the entire Bronx, a borough with a majority Hispanic population.

Councilman Riley expressed his desire for a larger audience, acknowledging the significance of the event. Joe McManus, representing Congressman Ritchie Torres, extended the Congressman’s regrets for being unable to attend.

The celebration’s entertainment featured four young women dressed in traditional Puerto Rican attire, performing a captivating dance. Their performance coincided with Assemblyman Zaccaro’s arrival, who subsequently spoke about the importance of community-focused events like this one. Zaccaro also highlighted his Fall Festival, held the previous night in the school yard.

As the event concluded, Senator Bailey thanked attendees and invited them to indulge in authentic Hispanic cuisine, available in the cafeteria.

Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from September 15 to October 15, honors the rich cultural contributions and achievements of Hispanic Americans. The Bronx, with its significant Hispanic population, plays a vital role in this celebration.

Similar events have been held across the city, including a reception hosted by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli and a celebration at Bronx Community College. These gatherings underscore the importance of recognizing and appreciating the Hispanic community’s invaluable impact on the city’s diversity and cultural landscape.
