Mayor Adams drives innovation, launches drone response program, expands public safety hiring, boosts maritime education

Mayor Eric Adams has rolled out a series of transformative initiatives this week, focusing on public safety, job access, and education in New York City.

The actions aim to reiterate his commitment to serving New Yorkers with innovative technology and expanded opportunities.

“Our team works around the clock to deliver for the City That Never Sleeps,” said Mayor Adams. “Whether it’s putting out a Friday night brush fire in Prospect Park or marching with the brave New Yorkers who served our country at the Veterans Day Parade, this administration shows up day and night for you and your neighbors.” He emphasized the administration’s dedication to addressing the city’s needs with impactful changes across various sectors.

One of the week’s most notable advancements is the launch of the “Drone as First Responder” program.

This cutting-edge initiative will enable drones to be deployed swiftly to emergency scenes, providing the NYPD with real-time data to aid in decision-making before responders even arrive.

“Not only will this innovative technology reduce response times,” Mayor Adams said, “but it will also help law enforcement boost search-and-rescue capabilities, enhance situational awareness, and keep our first responders safe as well.”

The program represents a leap forward in emergency response capabilities, combining technology and safety to better serve New Yorkers.

In another first, the city introduced a streamlined civil service exam, simplifying the path to public service for aspiring New Yorkers. This unique “combination exam” allows applicants to qualify for over 2,000 roles across multiple public safety titles with just one test and one application fee.

“We’re making it even easier for talented New Yorkers to serve their city,” Adams remarked. “This approach ensures that applying for a meaningful career is affordable for all and helps us recruit the best of the best.”

On the education front, Mayor Adams announced a major expansion of NYC’s Harbor School, a maritime high school dedicated to hands-on environmental and maritime studies. The expansion will add 445 seats, new facilities, and double the school’s footprint, furthering the city’s commitment to preparing students for emerging careers in the green economy and maritime industries. The project symbolizes a forward-thinking approach to education that aligns with the city’s economic and environmental goals.

With these initiatives, Mayor Adams aims to deliver safer streets, expanded career paths, and enhanced educational opportunities, positioning New York City as a leader in innovation and community-driven growth.
