Mayor Eric Adams launches ‘Drone as First Responder’ program, pioneers smart policing in NYC

In a landmark move towards modernizing law enforcement, Mayor Eric Adams has introduced New York City’s innovative “Drone as First Responder” program, which utilizes advanced drone technology to enhance public safety.

The program enables drones to respond swiftly to incidents, providing real-time data and situational awareness for officers and first responders on the ground.

Announcing the initiative, Mayor Adams highlighted the cutting-edge nature of the program, calling it “smart 21st-century policing.” He further explained the value of this technology in his message to New Yorkers, “The drones respond to scenes quickly and give officers and first responders on the ground valuable information about the situation. The “Drone as First Responder” program is expected to be particularly useful in high-stakes situations, from large public gatherings to emergencies in areas with limited accessibility. By equipping law enforcement with aerial views and immediate intelligence, the drones are set to improve response times, allowing first responders to better prepare for what awaits them on the scene.

The initiative represents Mayor Adams’ ongoing commitment to integrating technology into the city’s public safety efforts. As the program rolls out, it is anticipated that the drones will play a significant role in enhancing the operational capacity of the New York City Police Department and other emergency services, all while setting a standard for cities nationwide.
