President Joe Biden has announced a forward-looking strategy for Syria and the broader Middle East, emphasizing U.S. commitments to regional stability and the transition from the Assad regime.
“New opportunities are now opening up for the people of Syria and for the entire region,” Biden declared, signaling a renewed focus on diplomatic and security efforts.
Biden outlined a multi-faceted plan aimed at facilitating a transition toward an “independent, sovereign Syria.”
He affirmed the US intent to collaborate with Syrian groups engaged in United Nations-led processes, stressing the importance of a structured move away from President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
“First, we will engage with Syrian groups – including within the process led by the United Nations – to establish the transition away from the Assad Regime toward an independent, sovereign Syria,” Biden stated.
Ensuring security remains a priority, especially in eastern Syria, Biden pledged to protect American personnel and uphold efforts against ISIS.
“Second, we will help ensure stability in eastern Syria, protecting our personnel against any threats. We will maintain our mission against ISIS,” he said.
Recognizing the volatility of the region, Biden extended support to neighboring countries. “Third, we’ll support Syria’s neighbors – including Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Israel – should any threat arise from Syria during this period of transition.”
In closing, Biden underscored the U.S.’s enduring commitment to vigilance. “Finally, we will remain vigilant.”
